September 29 - THE BODY BENDS THE VOW DOES NOT
The passage of time changes the physical form. Aches arrive, energy shifts, and the reflection shows the accumulation of years. Illness alters the daily rhythm of life. Through all these physical transitions, the inner vow remains completely indestructible.
Nichiren Daishonin taught that the mortal human body is the Treasure Tower. Physical afflictions manifest the karma of the past. The resolute mind dedicated to the Mystic Law transforms that karma into brilliant light. The Lotus Sutra functions as the supreme medicine, possessing the power to lengthen the human life span and awaken absolute happiness.
The elderly disciple Abutsu-bo lived in the harsh conditions of Sado Island. He made grueling pilgrimages to Mount Minobu well into his eighties. His aging limbs felt the steep mountain paths, and his spirit soared with devotion. He demonstrated that the human heart holds endless strength. Nichiren Daishonin endured severe bodily weakness for eight years at Mount Minobu, maintaining continuous practice and living the Lotus Sutra unceasingly.
The Law responds to what you do now. Chanting Namu Myoho Renge Kyo with sincere faith ensures that the mind remains unbroken. You possess the power to rise above physical decline. EVERY CAUSE PLANTED TODAY SECURES ETERNAL VICTORY. Plant the seed now.

Morning Gongyo begins at a small table. The Gohonzon sits on it, and beside it lies a book, open to the Hoben chapter.
That book is Gongyo: The Eternal Law. It holds the two chapters Nichiren Daishonin's daily practice rests on, Hoben and Juryo, with Kanji, Romaji, and English side by side. The silent prayers are inside it. A pronunciation audio companion comes with it, so you hear each syllable before you say it aloud. The first morning you recite is the most awkward one, and the audio takes that awkwardness away.
The order of practice fits on one page. Chant Namu Myoho Renge Kyo three times, recite Hoben, recite Juryo, chant daimoku for as long as you wish, and close with three more. Page six of the book says it this way: "This practice draws no distinction of rank, robe, or position. It belongs to the person who chants."

A half-hearted effort returns half a result. A whole effort meets the whole Law. Nichiren Daishonin taught that Namu means dedication of life, offering all of yourself to Myoho Renge Kyo. Body and mind arrive together.
The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings states: "The non-duality of physical and mental forms is called the one ultimate"
Your body and your mind become one when you give your full voice. Every syllable spoken clearly carries your whole life inside it. Nothing is trimmed, nothing is rushed, and the rhythm keeps its wholeness.
Bring that completeness to your day. Finish the sentence you start. Say the full word to the person in front of you. Chant every syllable with your entire heart, even when you are tired, even when the hour is short.
Some causes you plant today will show their fruit soon. Others will surface later. All of them carry the full weight of your sincerity.
A whole heart takes one sincere moment, given completely. Give it fully, and the Law answers fully.

Nichiren Daishonin anchored every teaching in the text itself. He pointed to the sutra, to the line, to the character. Each word holds the full Law, and he let the words speak.
The Gosho states: "When we embrace these five characters, he will naturally transfer to us the merit of his causes and effects."
Five characters. Myoho Renge Kyo. Within them rests the whole of Ichinen Sanzen, three thousand realms in a single moment of your life. Each word of the Lotus Sutra contains all the other words, as a drop of the ocean contains all rivers. That is why the exact wording carries weight.
When you read a passage exactly as written, you meet the Buddha's own voice. When you chant the title exactly as given, your life meets the Law directly. Nothing stands between you and the cause you are planting.
Bring that care to today. Read slowly. Chant clearly. Let one true line settle in your heart, and watch what it does with your day.
Buddhahood in this life begins with a single word taken seriously.
