October 15th - THE HANDS THAT PASSED IT ON

Who placed this teaching in your hands?

Think of the long line behind you. A parent who chanted at dawn. A friend who spoke up at the right moment. Teachers and disciples, each one carrying the Law forward to the next person.

The Lotus Sutra shows how the Law travels. In Chapter 15, Shakyamuni Buddha summoned the Bodhisattvas of the Earth, led by Bodhisattva Superior Practices, and in Chapter 21 he entrusted them with spreading Namu Myoho Renge Kyo in the Final Dharma Age. The Law moves through people who take up that vow.

Nichiren Daishonin taught that transmission rests on the shared commitment of mentor and disciple. A disciple takes up the mentor’s vow and stands as a lion king for the correct teaching and the peace of the land.

That line now runs through YOU. Every voice of Namu Myoho Renge Kyo you chant today joins a long line of voices. Your daimoku carries the full weight of Myoho Renge Kyo, because the Law answers the cause you make now.

HONORING those who came before gives today’s practice its weight. Chant for them. Chant for the one who will receive the teaching from you.

Thank the hands that held it. Then hold it well.

    Namu Myoho Renge Kyo.
