October 14th - STILLNESS BEFORE REACTION

A sudden sound in the night. A sharp message on your phone. Your heart jumps before your mind catches up.

Everyone knows that moment. The body wants to answer right now, with a raised voice, a quick reply, a decision made in heat.

Nichiren Daishonin warned his follower Shijo Kingo about exactly this. He pointed to Emperor Sushun, whose short temper ended in his assassination, and he told Kingo that losing composure at a critical moment can undo years of accumulated virtue.

So take ONE BREATH. Let it go out slowly. Then chant Namu Myoho Renge Kyo with a steady voice, even a single line. Anchoring the mind in daimoku creates room, and in that room wisdom arrives.

The eight winds blow all day long. Praise lifts, blame stings, gain delights, loss hurts. The practitioner stands in the middle of them with the Gohonzon alive in their own life.

A calm response is STRENGTH. It protects your relationships, your work and your good name. Each calm choice is a cause planted in the present, and the Law answers it at once.

Tonight, when something startles you, pause. Breathe. Chant. Then speak.

    Namu Myoho Renge Kyo.
