Six names. One instruction.
Five days before he died in 1282, Nichiren Daishonin called Nisshō, Nichirō, Nikkō, Nikō, Nitchō, and Nichiji to his side and asked them to lead together. He died on October 13. His ashes came back to Mount Minobu twelve days later.
Then his disciples scattered.
One of them, Nikkō, eventually walked away from Minobu entirely. With a supporter named Nanjō Tokimitsu, he built a new temple in Fuji called Taiseki-ji.
Here is the part I will not soften for you. TWO different traditions tell two different stories about what happened to Nichiren's own ashes after that. One says they never left Minobu. The other says Nikkō carried them to Fuji himself. Both cannot be fully true. I am not going to pick a side here, because the honest answer is that nobody has settled it, not even now, more than seven hundred years later.
What I trust is what Nichiren wrote in his own hand. In a letter called Message to Lord Hakii, he said plainly, "Wherever I die, I would like to be buried in the valley at Minobu." No committee wrote that sentence for him.
In another letter, On Repaying Debts of Gratitude, he described what a wise person does when someone in power simply will not listen, no matter how many times you try. Step back. Withdraw, the way a sage withdraws to the mountains and forests. Picture a lantern being carried away from a noisy crowd toward a quiet hillside. THE LIGHT DOES NOT GO OUT. It just moves somewhere it can finally be seen.
Same six men. Same teaching. Three schools grew out of them, and each one still calls the very same object by a different name today: Object of Devotion. Object of Worship. The Great Mandala, Venerated Supreme.
In 1991, one of those branches formally cut ties with the largest lay group built from its own membership. That split has never healed.
This is not a footnote in Buddhist history. It is the reason three different groups of practitioners can read the same letters and reach three different conclusions about what Nichiren actually meant. Namu Myoho Renge Kyo
You can chant Namu Myoho Renge Kyo without a Gohonzon in front of you. Yes, you can.
Your heart carries the weight here. A dedicated corner of a room, kept clean and quiet, can hold your practice until a Gohonzon arrives.
The daimoku itself, Namu Myoho Renge Kyo, holds the entirety of the Lotus Sutra inside its sound. When you chant it, the Law vibrates through your life and through the space around you. This is true with a Gohonzon present. This is true while you build toward one.
Think of it this way. A mirror shows a face clearly, but a face is still a face in the dark, before any mirror is held up to it. The Gohonzon works like a mirror, showing you your own life reflected in the Law. Faith is the cause. Chanting is the expression. The mirror helps you see it. Your chanting still moves the Law through your life whether the mirror stands in front of you yet or not.
Keep your voice steady and clear when you chant. Sit upright. Speak each syllable of Na-mu Myo-ho Ren-ge Kyo distinctly. Give the practice a fixed time and place, five minutes or fifteen, whatever your day allows. This builds the ground your Gohonzon will stand on when it comes to you.
