In 1271, the military government exiled Nichiren Daishonin to Sado Island. This location was notorious. It was a place of desolation. It was a graveyard for the unwanted. The authorities intended for him to die there from exposure or starvation.
Nichiren Daishonin arrived in Sado during the onset of winter. He lived in a dilapidated hut in Tsukahara. The walls were broken. Snow piled up inside his dwelling. He lacked warm clothing and sufficient food. The local inhabitants were hostile. Despite these life-threatening conditions, the Daishonin did not retreat. He did not abandon his faith. Instead, he deepened his resolve. He used the extreme cold of Sado to forge the warmest compassion for all living beings.
During this exile, Nichiren Daishonin wrote some of his most significant works. He penned The Opening of the Eyes and The Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind. He demonstrated that true enlightenment exists within the harsh reality of daily life. He proved that the environment does not define the happiness of a Buddha. The strength of the human spirit defines the environment.
One of his most enduring letters from this period is "Winter Always Turns to Spring." He wrote this to encourage a follower named Myoichi-ama. She faced her own severe difficulties. Her husband had died. She was raising children alone. She suffered from the social pressure of following an exiled priest. Nichiren Daishonin offered her a promise grounded in the laws of nature. He stated that those who believe in the Lotus Sutra are like winter, which always turns to spring. He noted that never, from ancient times on, has anyone heard or seen of winter turning back to autumn.
This teaching is absolute. It signifies that suffering is temporary. It means that the freezing trials of life are actually the incubation period for growth. Winter is not a permanent state of death. It is the necessary precursor to the blossoming of spring.
