During this exile, Nichiren Daishonin wrote some of his most significant works. He penned The Opening of the Eyes and The Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind. He demonstrated that true enlightenment exists within the harsh reality of daily life. He proved that the environment does not define the happiness of a Buddha. One of his most enduring letters from this period is "Winter Always Turns to Spring." He wrote this to encourage a follower named Myoichi-ama. She faced her own severe difficulties. Her husband had died. She was raising children alone. She suffered from the social pressure of following an exiled priest. Nichiren Daishonin offered her a promise grounded in the laws of nature. He stated that those who believe in the Lotus Sutra are like winter, which always turns to spring. He noted that never, from ancient times on, has anyone heard or seen of winter turning back to autumn.
This teaching is absolute. It signifies that suffering is temporary. It means that the freezing trials of life are actually the incubation period for growth. Winter is not a permanent state of death. It is the necessary precursor to the blossoming of spring.

All other strategies serve only as support to this primary force. Victory belongs to those who pray with intensity and conviction. TRUST in the power of the Law. People search the world for sacred places. They look for divinity in distant lands or grand structures. They fail to look in the most important place. Nichiren Daishonin taught that the Treasure Tower exists within your own body. The ceremony in the air described in the Lotus Sutra happens within your life. Your body is the palace of the ninth consciousness. It is a vessel of the eternal law. No distinctions exist between the Buddha and the common mortal who chants the Daimoku. Do not despise your current reality. It is the very ground where you attain enlightenment. STAND TALL in your identity. You possess a worth that no wealth can buy.

Fear silences many people. It makes us shrink away from challenges. We retreat when we should advance. Buddhism compares the Buddha to a lion king. The lion fears no other beast. Its roar commands silence and respect from all other animals. Chanting Namu Myoho Renge Kyo is the roar of the lion. It is the sound of absolute victory.
Nichiren Daishonin declared that misfortune changes into fortune. The roar of the lion turns poison into medicine. When you chant with the force of a charging lion, you summon incredible strength. No obstacle can stand before a person who possesses this spirit. The devilish functions of life flee before this great sound.
You must summon this courage from within. Refuse to be defeated by your circumstances. Roar against the difficulties that try to hold you back. Your voice carries the energy of the entire universe. Use it to declare your victory before it even happens. The lion runs forward. It never retreats. LIVE with this fearless spirit. Your courage determines the outcome of your battles.

Nichiren Daishonin identified a single, subtle error that prevents the attainment of Buddhahood. In his writing "On Attaining Buddhahood in This Lifetime," he warned his follower Toki Jonin about the danger of seeking the Law outside of one's own life. This tendency remains the greatest obstacle for practitioners today.
The Error of Separation
Many people chant with the hope that a power outside themselves will intervene. They view the Buddha as a distant figure or the Gohonzon as an external deity. Nichiren Daishonin taught that this mindset turns the practice of the Mystic Law into an endless austerity. Even if one chants a million daimoku, this separation renders the practice painful and less effective. The Daishonin stated that one must summon deep faith that Myoho-renge-kyo is one's own life.
The Mirror of the Environment
The Daishonin explained that the environment acts as a direct reflection of the inner life. He used the analogy of a mirror. A tarnished mirror reflects a distorted image. A polished mirror reflects clearly.
