This hesitation stems from the darkness of fundamental ignorance. Nichiren Daishonin taught that faith acts as a sharp sword. This blade cuts through the roots of delusion. It severs the karma that binds us to suffering.
The Lotus Sutra is this mighty sword. No armor of doubt is strong enough to withstand it. When you chant Namu Myoho Renge Kyo, you wield this weapon. You strike at the heart of your own negativity. The power of the sword depends on the person who wields it. A coward cannot use a great blade. A person of strong faith uses this sword to protect their happiness.
This practice requires courage. You must banish the weak thoughts that linger in your mind. Believe in the power of the Mystic Law to change your destiny. The sword of the Lotus Sutra remains the only tool capable of shattering the chains of birth and death. TRUST in this power. Your life changes the moment you decide to fight for your own enlightenment.

The noise of television or arguments may drown out one's voice. In such moments, the practitioner might feel trapped or cowardly. However, the Daishonin explained that obstacles arise naturally as one advances. He identified these forces as the Three Obstacles and Four Devils. Their function is to disrupt faith and break the practitioner's peace.
The video "Can you chant Daimoku in your head?" addresses this crucial struggle. It introduces Oku Daimoku or silent chanting. This is the strategy of chanting Namu-myoho-renge-kyo within one's mind. Some worry that a silent prayer is weak. They fear the universe cannot hear them without sound. The Daishonin stated that it is the heart that is important. "Muster your faith, and pray to this Gohonzon. Then what is there that cannot be achieved? There can be no doubt that the sutra passages 'There is no doubt that [those who hear this sutra] will become Buddhas' and 'The Sun and Moon, the Jewel of the Heavens' are true.
It is the heart that is important. No matter how earnestly Nichiren prays for you, if you lack faith, it will be like trying to set fire to wet tinder. Spur yourself to muster the power of faith. Regard your survival as wondrous. Employ the strategy of the Lotus Sutra before any other."
A practitioner must remain calm like a rock. Reacting with anger to family opposition only feeds the negative cycle. It lowers one's life condition. The Daishonin advised his followers to employ the Strategy of the Lotus Sutra before any other. This means placing faith first. When one chants silently with profound focus, the vibration of life changes. This inner sound reaches the Ten Directions. It transforms the environment from the inside out.

True strength comes from standing on your own two feet. We often look for a savior outside or a group to carry us. Nichiren Buddhism teaches the spirit of the lion king. A lion runs forward without waiting for a companion.
Independence requires the courage to own your destiny. You declare that you are the protagonist of your life. The Law supports the one who acts with resolve. Chanting Namu-myoho-renge-kyo activates the infinite power residing within your own chest.
Make a vow today to win where you are. Your victory inspires those around you to rise as well. Dependence on others breeds weakness. Reliance on the Mystic Law breeds unshakable confidence. BE THE PILLAR of your home and community.

He used the metaphor of the lion to describe this state of life, noting in "Reply to Kyo-o" that the lion, king of beasts, unleashes the same power whether trapping a tiny ant or attacking a fierce animal. This suggests that a person of faith acts with total integrity and independence, regardless of the size of the obstacle or the status of the opponent.
Furthermore, Nichiren Daishonin warned against being swayed by "evil friends" (influences that lead one away from the truth). In "Letter to the Brothers," he explained that one should be neither influenced nor frightened by the three obstacles and four devils, for falling under their influence leads to the paths of evil. To "not let anyone tell you what to do" in a Buddhist sense is to refuse to let fear, societal pressure, or slanderous influences sever one's connection to the Mystic Law. It means wielding the "mighty sword of the Lotus Sutra" with courage, rather than being a coward who renders the sword useless. True independence is found in this courageous faith, which makes one as free from fear as the lion king.
