What is the difference between Nichiren Buddhism and other schools?
The difference between Nichiren Buddhism and other schools is its exclusive devotion to the Lotus Sutra as the only effective path to immediate enlightenment. Other Buddhist traditions rely on provisional teachings and promise salvation in a future life. Nichiren taught that ordinary people can attain Buddhahood in their present form today.
The Four Dictums and Doctrinal Critiques
Nichiren fiercely criticized the established Buddhist sects of his era. He believed their teachings led practitioners away from the Lotus Sutra. He formalized his severe condemnations into the Four Dictums. First, he rejected the Pure Land school's aspiration to be reborn in a future paradise after death. Second, he condemned Zen for claiming enlightenment could be attained outside the written scriptures. Third, he criticized Shingon for relying on esoteric rituals and magic. Finally, he condemned the Ritsu sect for hiding behind outdated monastic rules. Nichiren categorized these provisional teachings as false paths that prevent ordinary people from achieving true enlightenment.
The Supremacy of the Lotus Sutra
Nichiren articulated the absolute supremacy of the Lotus Sutra in his landmark treatise submitted to the Kamakura government in 1260. The Rissho Ankoku Ron systematically dismantles reliance on lesser teachings. Nichiren identifies the Lotus Sutra as the core of the entire body of teachings expounded by Shakyamuni Buddha. He emphasizes the grave karmic consequences of abandoning this supreme law. To secure the peace of the nation, Nichiren urged leaders to embrace the single good doctrine of the Lotus Sutra. He taught that this embrace transforms the threefold world into an indestructible Buddha land.
Immediate Enlightenment in This Very Body
The doctrine of Sokushin Jobutsu is the hallmark of Nichiren Buddhism. This principle means attaining Buddhahood in this very body. Older Mahayana traditions presented enlightenment as a distant goal requiring bodhisattva austerities spanning millions of aeons. Practitioners had to accumulate merit over countless lifetimes. Nichiren taught that the cause of Buddhist practice and the effect of Buddhahood exist simultaneously. The lotus flower symbolizes this immediate reality by producing blossoms and seeds at the exact same time. By chanting Namu Myoho Renge Kyo, individuals instantly tap into the Buddha nature already present within their current lives.
