How do I set up a home altar and place the Gohonzon?

To set up a home altar and place the Gohonzon, select a quiet area dedicated to your daily practice. Enshrine the Gohonzon inside a protective wooden cabinet known as a butsudan. This physical space allows you to sit upright, focus your heart on the Mystic Law, and chant daily.

The Altar as the Treasure Tower

The physical setup of the altar connects directly to the Ceremony in the Air described in the Lotus Sutra. During this event, a massive jewel-adorned Treasure Tower emerges from the earth. The Gohonzon graphically depicts this exact ceremony. Nichiren Daishonin clarifies that the physical altar and the surrounding room become sacred ground. The place where you chant daimoku is the place of the Treasure Tower. Furthermore, the Treasure Tower represents the awakened life of the practitioner. Establishing a home altar is a physical declaration of your inherent Buddhahood. It brings the hidden Treasure Tower up from within your own life.

The Oneness of Life and Environment

The physical state of your altar reflects your internal life condition. This principle relies on the nonduality of the individual and the environment. The subjective realm is called shoho. The objective environment is eho. Life encompasses both the spiritual self and the physical surroundings. They interpenetrate completely. Nichiren explains that a pure mind results in a pure land. Maintaining a clean and respectful altar space is an act of internal purification. Chanting Namu Myoho Renge Kyo before the Gohonzon polishes the mind. This action transforms the immediate physical room into the Buddha's Land of Tranquil Light.

Traditional Altar Accessories

Practitioners use specific accessories called butsugu to complete the altar setup. A central incense burner called a koro sits at the front. Candlesticks known as shokudai provide lighting. Vases called kabin hold aromatic evergreen branches called shikimi. A Buddhist bell known as a rin is rung to keep rhythm during daily Gongyo recitations. You place these items systematically in front of the butsudan. Traditional practice involves offering flowers, incense, and lighted oil lamps. You sit facing the Gohonzon and the arranged butsugu to focus your mind. The complete arrangement supports the physical and spiritual acts of devotion.
