Nichiren Daishonin wrote to the lay nun Myōichi during one of the harder stretches of his followers' persecution. He did not promise her an ending to hardship on a fixed date. He gave her something more certain than a date. He gave her a law of nature that has never once failed.
Winter has a direction built into it. It cannot double back into autumn no matter how long it lasts or how deep the snow sits on the ground. A prayer rooted in the Lotus Sutra carries the same built-in direction. It does not wait to be finished before it becomes real.
