Every morning and every evening, practitioners of Nichiren Buddhism sit in front of the Gohonzon and chant the same five words. Namu Myoho Renge Kyo. 7 syllables, one continuous line, repeated until the room fills with sound.
That line carries the entire teaching inside it. This cheat sheet breaks it into its four working parts, with pronunciation and meaning for each.
Quick answer: Namu Myoho Renge Kyo means devotion to the Mystic Law contained in the Lotus Sutra. Nichiren Daishonin established it as the central practice of his teaching in 13th century Japan. Chanting it connects the practitioner directly with that Law.
Namu 南 (NAH-moo)
Namu comes from the Sanskrit word namas, carried into Chinese as kimyo, dedication of life. Saying it means putting your life behind the words that follow it.
Myoho 妙法 (MYO-ho)
Myo names the Dharma nature, the potential for enlightenment already present in a person's life. Ho names fundamental darkness, the delusion that obscures it. Saying Myoho together reveals that the two were never actually separate.
Renge 蓮華 (REN-geh)
The lotus flower blooms and seeds at the same moment, unlike most plants where the flower falls before the fruit forms. Nichiren used that timing to explain cause and effect happening together, not one after the other. The r in Renge is soft, closer to an l when spoken aloud.
Kyo 経 (KYO)
Kyo means sutra, the voice of a Buddha's teaching carried into words. Nichiren wrote that the voices of all living beings do the Buddha's work, and that this Law continues across past, present, and future without break.
Namu or Nam?
The traditional chant opens with Namu, not the shortened Nam. Both point to the same devotion. The channel name uses the short form. When you chant, use Namu.

In September of 1277, a samurai named Shijo Kingo stood close to losing everything his lord had given him. False accusations had reached the ears of power. He wrote to Nichiren Daishonin about it, the way a man writes when he no longer knows which way is up.
"More valuable than treasures in a storehouse are the treasures of the body, and the treasures of the heart are the most valuable of all. From the time you read this letter on, strive to accumulate the treasures of the heart!"

Nichiren names three treasures in order, on purpose. Money and land can be seized in an afternoon. Health and skill fade with age or illness. The treasures of the heart cannot be confiscated. No lord can order them taken.
"諸行無常" (All things that exist are impermanent)
Kingo's estate was never guaranteed. This is the same truth in four characters instead of forty. THIS IS THE ORDER OF PRIORITY THAT DECIDES WHETHER A CRISIS BREAKS A PERSON OR REVEALS THEM.
Your storehouse can be full or empty. Your body will age regardless. The treasures of the heart are the one inheritance no accusation can reach.

Namu Myoho Renge Kyo
On April 25, 1273, Nichiren Daishonin sat inside a small hut on Sado Island, in a place called Ichinosawa. He picked up his brush and finished a long writing called the Kanjin no Honzon-shō, "The Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind." That single piece of paper changed how his students would practice for the next seven hundred years.
Before Nichiren, a monk named Chih-i climbed a mountain in China called Tiantai. He spent years building a picture of the universe in his mind and wrote it all down in ten long scrolls, called the Mo-ho Chih-kuan. His own students studied under him for over a decade before he considered them ready. Nichiren called this kind of practice "contemplation in principle." The word for it in Japanese is ri. The truth is real, but a person has to build a path to it, piece by piece, inside the mind.
Nichiren looked at his own time and saw something different. Japan was full of war, hunger, and fear. A farmer had no ten years to spend building a picture in his mind. A mother raising children through famine had no ten scrolls to study. Nichiren wrote that Chih-i and his teacher Nan-yüeh knew of a deeper practice but never taught it, because the people of their own age were not ready for it. He put the difference plainly:
"They dealt only with contemplating the Dharma, not with practicing the Dharma. To practice the Dharma means to chant the Five Characters, Myoho Renge Kyo, before the Most Venerable One."
That sentence marks the line. Contemplating means building something inside the mind. Practicing means standing in front of something already whole, and chanting to it.
Nichiren explained why nothing needs to be built. He wrote:
"For those who are incapable of understanding the truth of ichinen sanzen, Lord Shakyamuni Buddha, with His great compassion, wraps this jewel in the five characters of Myo, Ho, Ren, Ge, and Kyo, and hangs it around the neck of the ignorant in the Latter Age of Degeneration."
Ichinen sanzen means three thousand realms of life held inside a single moment of thought. Chih-i needed ten scrolls to explain it. Nichiren wrapped the same jewel into five characters, small enough for an ordinary person to carry around the neck instead of climbing a mountain to reach it.
On July 8 of that same year, Nichiren picked up his brush again on Sado Island. He inked the first Gohonzon, the object of devotion, by hand, and wrote at the bottom: "Nichiren inscribes this for the first time." The jewel was no longer only an idea. It was ink on paper, something a person could look at with open eyes.
This is why he told his followers something most people never hear explained. He wrote:
"Never seek this Gohonzon outside yourself. The Gohonzon exists only within the mortal flesh of us ordinary people who embrace the Lotus Sutra and chant Namu-myoho-renge-kyo."
The Gohonzon on the wall and the Buddha nature in a person's own body are already joined. Earlier teachers called this the fusion of reality and wisdom, kyochi myogo. Reality and the mind that perceives it are already one. There is no gap left for a picture in the head to cross.
Nichiren gave his students one more image, the simplest one:
"A mind now clouded by the illusions of the innate darkness of life is like a tarnished mirror, but when polished, it is sure to become like a clear mirror, reflecting the essential nature of phenomena and the true aspect of reality. Arouse deep faith, and diligently polish your mirror day and night. How should you polish it? Only by chanting Namu-myoho-renge-kyo."
A person standing before a mirror keeps the eyes open and looks. This is why the practice asks for open eyes on the Gohonzon and a voice chanting Namu Myoho Renge Kyo, with nothing added and nothing pictured. The building was already finished on Sado Island, by a man with a brush, a sheet of paper, and enough faith to outlast a graveyard in the cold.
